This visa allows you to:

  • take part in structured workplace-based training to enhance your skills in your current occupation, area of tertiary study, or field of expertise (Occupational Trainee stream)
  • participate in a professional development training program in Australia after being invited to do so Professional Development stream
  • observe or participate in an Australian research project after being invited to do so (Research stream).

Requirements:

You might be able to get this visa if you are one of the following:

  • an occupational trainee (Occupational Trainee stream)
  • a professional, manager or government official (Professional Development stream)
  • a professional academic (Research stream)

You must meet the requirements of the stream in which you apply.​

About this visa:

The Training and Research visa (subclass 402) is for people who want to come to Australia on a temporary basis to participate in occupational training, observe or participate in research as a visiting academic, or participate in a professional development program.

This is not a work visa.

This visa has three streams:

  • Occupational Trainee stream: for people who need structured workplace-based training to enhance their skills in their current occupation, area of tertiary study, or field of expertise.
  • Professional Development stream: for professionals, managers or government officials invited to participate in a professional development training program in Australia. The program must have been arranged by an employer outside Australia and usually lasts up to 18 months.
  • Research stream: for professional academics invited to visit Australia to observe or participate in an Australian research project at an Australian tertiary or research institution.

To apply in the Occupational Trainee or Research stream: you and anyone included in your application can be in or outside Australia when you apply:

Applying in Australia: If you are inside Australia you must lodge your application in Australia.

Applying outside Australia: If you are outside Australia you must lodge your application outside Australia.

You may be in or outside Australia at time of grant regardless of where the visa has been lodged.

To apply in the Professional Development stream: you must be outside Australia when you apply and when the visa is granted. Your sponsor can lodge the application on your behalf.

What this visa Lets You Do:

This visa allows you to:

  • enter Australia at any time after your visa is granted, if you are outside Australia at the time of visa grant
  • stay in Australia for the duration of the training, research position or program
  • do the training or activity specified in your visa application
  • travel to and from Australia as many times as you want until you have finished participating in the program or your visa expires, whichever occurs first.

Before You Apply:

You must have a valid passport from an eligible country to apply for this visa. This is a sponsored visa. Before you can apply for the visa, your sponsoring organisation must have applied for or been approved as a sponsor:

Occupational Trainee stream: your sponsor nominates you for this visa, unless your sponsor is a Commonwealth agency (in which case no nomination is required).
Professional Development stream: your approved sponsor organises a professional development program with an employer from outside Australia, who invites you to participate.
Research stream: your sponsor invites you to observe or participate in an Australian research project.
The following visas are now closed to new applications:

Visiting Academic visa (subclass 419)
Occupational Trainee visa (subclass 442)
Professional Development visa (subclass 470).
If you already hold one of these visas, it will still be valid until the date you were given when it was granted.

Sports trainees who previously used the Sport visa (subclass 421) should now apply for the Training and Research visa under the Occupational Trainee stream.

Your passport

You must have a valid passport from an eligible country to apply for this visa. If you plan to get a new passport, you should do so before applying for your visa. If you get a new passport after you have lodged your application, give the details of your new passport to the processing office.
